Penny Wallaby

Snuggle Bug

Penny, named after The Beatles song "Penny Lane," wants to spend all day, every day, snuggling. She loves to lick, but that's just her way of giving a big kiss. She is dainty and sweet, but can still get wild. Her favorite activity, besides cuddling of course, is chasing the rabbits in the rabbit pen and zooming around the house.

Her brother, Jude, is also at Shepperly Farm Petting Zoo.

Shepperly Farm Fun Facts

Wallabies are primarily found in Australia and on other surrounding islands.

Wallabies are marsupials and are a member of the Kangaroo family.

When wallaby joeys are born, they are helpless and undeveloped. They typically spend 2 months living exclusively inside their mother's pouch. Inside the pouch, the joeys continue to develop and grow until they are ready to come out. Once they are out of their mother's pouch, they often jump back in when a situation becomes dangerous.

Wallabies are one species of animal that experience the phenomenon called embryonic diapause. This occurs when a mother wallaby becomes pregnant again, but her other joey is still inside her pouch. The growing embryo will pause development until the joey is ready to leave the pouch. Then the embryo will continue development.
